You’ve seen the final product: a stunning treehouse in the canopy built by highly skilled artists and craftsmen. But equally as interesting is how the process begins. There’s both a practical and a spiritual component to this process, according to Adam Laufer, lead builder at World Treehouses of Asheville.

On the practical end, the tree needs to be able to sustain and support the structure. “Walk around the circumference of the tree; notice if there are any hollow spots," he recommends. "Are there any road cuts nearby that are affecting the roots? Is the forest around it healthy? Trees work in community,” he explains, “so having trees that are healthy nearby is a good indicator.”

Apart from the nuts and bolts is something less tangible, but equally essential: building a relationship with the trees.

“You start by saying, ‘Thank you, tree – you’ve done us a great favor by allowing us to have a place to live, to have building supply, to have fresh oxygen, by circulating the water from the ground to the sky,’” says Laufer. “Ask its permission. Be grateful and thankful; trees are very resilient and very giving.”

Beginning our work this way allows us to create not just a structure, but a safe place, infused with peace and positive energy.
