Walking into our recently completed Shinrin-yoku tree house near Asheville, NC, you are touching the beauty of nature and walking in the footsteps of those who came before us.

This gorgeous, weathered floor has already been crossed by many feet. These boards are reclaimed pine flooring from an old grain mill owned by Susan B Anthony’s uncle.

The two doors and the wall paneling are all made from beautiful, variegated tulip poplar wood. Tall tulip poplars, along with oaks, maples and other hardwoods, fill the Appalachian forests surrounding this entirely tree-suspended tree house.

Japanese architecture and timber-frame styles inspire us. So, we created Shinrin-yoku, a tree house built in the beautiful mountains near Asheville, NC. This getaway for our client is dedicated to immersion in the forest for healing, and it offers her and her family and guests the feel of a private Japanese spa, suspended in the trees.

We completed these details by creating a hand-made copper-lined sit tub for the tree house’s tiny bathroom! We studied Japanese tub design, selected the finest copper and materials, and the result is this custom tub, complete with a wooden sitting bench.

When you go in for a soak, your whole body is covered up to your neck in the sitting position. Might you want one of these tubs in your tree house?

The handrail of Shinrin-Yoku, our latest completed treehouse, was crafted out of locally sourced locust trees. Persistent locust trees are sometimes considered “weed trees” because of their prevalence and invasiveness. But, when these seedlings sprout on the north side of a mountain, these trees’ wood grows strong and true. In fact, locust lumber is 2.5 times the strength of oak, and it’s rot- and insect-resistant!

Adam Laufer, World Treehouses owner and lead builder, shows off our team’s latest completed creation: Shinrin-yoku. This cozy forest sanctuary treehouse is clothed in siding made from western red cedar that is stained with linseed oil and iron oxide. The leaves around it are starting to change. Due to the organic variations in color, the siding will allow the treehouse to disappear into its fall foliage backdrop, just like the “n” in the word "autumn."

From our site overlooking the beautiful Toe River near Asheville, NC, we’re beginning to create the entirely tree-suspended tree-platform with a roof that we’re calling River Tree Sanctuary. This new project for World Treehouses of Asheville, NC began with a large tree pulled out of the river to make beams for the treehouse. When our team discovered the tree was too rotten and could not be saved, we went on a hunt for other downed trees in the forest. As you can see from our photos, our hunt was fruitful! We’re now milling multiple trees up by hand and chainsaw mill into big beams for the structure.

The vertical support of the lovingly handmade ladder is a maple that grew leaning up against one of the chestnut oaks that support the structure. Since the maple tree had to be cut away, the World Treehouses team honored this beautiful tree by meticulously debarking it and installing as the strong column supporting the ladder to the upstairs bedroom. It is a centerpiece for the treehouse’s main floor.
